'노스코리아 리더십 워치'를 발행하는 북한 전문가 마이클 매든에 따르면 리설주는 동해 쪽에 위치한 북한 3대 도시 청진에서 1984년 태어났다. 김일성 대학을 졸업했고 전 인민군 공·대공 책임자였던 리평철의 조카손녀이기도 하다. 매든에 따르면 그녀의 부친역시 인민군 장교였다.

According to Michael Madden, an expert who publishes North Korea Leadership Watch, Ri was born around 1984 in Chongjin, North Korea's third largest city, on the country's east coast. She is a graduate of Kim Il Sung University, and the granddaughter or grandniece of Ri Pyong Chol, former head of the Korean People's Army (KPA) Air and Anti-Air Forces, and her father was also a KPA officer, according to Madden.

We all love to publicly vent against airlines but today I would like to thank Southwest Airlines and the doctor who happened to be onboard. They emergency landed the plane for my dad. Because of their speed and professionalism, my father's life was saved.
